A 1921 fishing village
Lantana was incorporated in 1921 and describes itself as a coastal community that keeps the charm of its origins as an old Florida fishing village; it covers about three square miles and has an eight-acre municipal beach with 745 feet of ocean frontage. Since December 20, 2024, new or substantially improved buildings in its flood zones must be built to base flood elevation plus one foot.
Census figures put the median year built at 1975: 21 percent of homes date from the 1950s, 18 percent from the 1960s and 56 percent were built before 1980. Forty-three percent are single-family detached, 24 percent are in small buildings of two to nine units and 29 percent are in buildings of ten or more.
What the town requires
The Lantana building permit
The Building Division of the Development Services Department issues roofing permits. Applications and plans are accepted by mail or in person, with two paper copies and one digital copy, and payment by cash or check at submittal. The town’s renovation checklist asks for two copies of the product approvals, roofing included, and the asbestos notification statement; a certified notice of commencement is needed before an inspection is scheduled.
Inspections, including the tin-tag inspection, are requested by 3 p.m. for the next business day. The town code requires building exteriors to show no deterioration, weathering or discoloration.
