New siding should not conceal an unresolved problem. Plan the transitions, supporting material and water-management details before the wall is closed.

Follow the specified separation from roofs, paving, grade and horizontal flashings. Keep intended drainage exits open.

Discuss James Hardie products, profiles and finishes with the office; availability and suitability are confirmed for the project. Hardie is a brand, not the name of every fiber-cement product.
Choose against the architecture, exposure, finish, care expectations and project requirements. Wood offers natural grain and options for staining or painting. Fiber cement offers manufactured profiles and textures, including wood-look options. Neither choice removes the need for a properly detailed wall or ongoing maintenance.
Cedar, pine and redwood are examples discussed in Perkins’ original siding service information. Species, grade, sourcing, profile and finish need to be confirmed for your project. Horizontal lap, vertical board-and-batten and other patterns create different proportions; review samples before selecting a system.
Sometimes. A repair depends on the extent of deterioration, the condition of the backing, available replacement material and whether the existing water-management details can be retained or repaired. An exact color or texture match is not guaranteed. Discuss a targeted repair and a larger replacement as separate options where appropriate.
Hidden damage can change the scope. Ask the proposal to explain investigation, notification and approval of additional repairs. Deteriorated sheathing or framing should be addressed before it is concealed; structural concerns may require a qualified design professional.
No siding should be treated as a maintenance-free, waterproof wall by itself. Follow the selected product’s care instructions and maintain coatings, joints and related details as specified. Water management behind the siding remains important, and the finish is not a substitute for fixing a leak.
Review water-resistive barriers, flashing at openings and roof intersections, drainage, product-specific clearances and fasteners appropriate to the wall and exposure. Use the current installation instructions and applicable project requirements instead of a generic fastening or sealing rule.
Requirements depend on the address and scope. Confirm permitting, product documentation and inspections with the relevant building department. An association or historic district may also review material, profile, trim and color. Do not order on the assumption that a different material or appearance is automatically acceptable.
Confirm finishing in the written proposal, including factory-finished versus site-painted products, cut-edge treatment and any related trim work. Perkins also offers exterior painting, carpentry and impact-window services, which can be discussed as a coordinated scope. They are not automatically included in a siding quote.
