Snap-Lock Metal Roof vs Mechanically Seamed Roof

Published by Perkins Roofing Corp.

A snap-lock metal roof and a mechanically seamed standing seam roof can look almost identical from the ground. Perkins explains the difference: snap-lock panels simply snap together, while mechanically seamed panels are bent and crimped together for wind performance.

Compare the panel connection, not just the appearance

The central distinction in this video is how adjacent panels connect. A quote that says only “standing seam” does not answer that question. Ask the contractor to identify the panel system and explain whether the seam snaps together or is mechanically formed. Then compare the complete specified assembly rather than assuming two similarly shaped roofs are equivalent. The video explains a construction difference; it does not establish which system is approved or appropriate for a particular building.

Questions for your project

  • What panel system and seam method does the quote specify?
  • Which approval documents apply to the proposed assembly?
