Roof Underlayment for Shingle Roofs
On a shingle roof, the shingles are only the layer you see. Perkins explains why the underlayment beneath them has to handle South Florida heat and resist tearing, and suggests asking your roofer what is going underneath.
Ask what will be beneath the shingles
Underlayment is easy to overlook when choosing a visible shingle color or style. This video redirects the discussion to the layer beneath that finished surface, especially heat and tear resistance. Ask for the proposed product by name and have the contractor explain why it suits the roof assembly. That makes it possible to compare the same part of two proposals. The short is an introduction to the question, not a product approval or an assessment of an existing roof.
Questions for your project
- Which underlayment product is included in my proposal?
- How does that product fit the proposed shingle assembly?
