Different Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Your house is undoubtedly one of your most significant financial commitments. When it comes to maintaining its roof, exploring the different types of asphalt shingle roofs is crucial. Choosing the right type of roof shingles may help you keep your roof in good condition and repair any damage as soon as possible to protect your property.

There is a wide range of roofing materials on the market, and the options might be overwhelming.

Asphalt shingles are one of the most common roofing materials and a good choice for any home. A variety of colors and styles are available to complement any home, and the product can last up to 20-30 years, depending on how well it is maintained.

Replacing your roof is a nerve-wracking process to go through. However, choosing the right type of asphalt shingle is an essential step.

Asphalt shingles are available in three varieties. Despite their similarity in materials, these three varieties are not interchangeable. They are:

3-tab Asphalt Shingles

In the roofing industry, 3-tab asphalt shingles are one of many options. It’s the cheapest and most common type of shingle available on the market. They’re built of fiberglass treated with minerals to make them highly durable.

With proper care, these asphalt shingles can endure for 20 to 30 years, depending on the weather and other factors. 3-tab shingles are available in a wide range of colors and styles. In addition, the product is divided into three tabs, giving it a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

3-tab asphalt shingles are flat and have three tabs on each shingle strip, which gives them their name.

  • Cost: It’s the most affordable asphalt shingle option.

  • Warranty: They come with a manufacturer’s warranty of 25 years.

  • Lifespan: As much as 25 years with good attic ventilation and a properly installed roof.

Dimensional Asphalt Shingles

The most popular asphalt shingle is the dimensional shingle, which is sturdy and long-lasting. The multi-layered shingles have a multi-dimensional texture and appearance and are more durable because they are constructed of two or more layers.

Dimensional shingles can mimic the look of a wood shake roof or create a random pattern.

With various colors and styles, dimensional shingles are an excellent option for any home. Dimensional shingles are the best option for those who want an asphalt shingle to endure 30 years or more.

  • Cost: The cost is about 15% higher than the 3-tab shingle.

  • Warranty: The manufacturer backs them with a 30-year warranty (which is prorated after the first 10-year period). For an additional 50 years of non-prorated warranty, you can register your dimensional asphalt shingle roof with its manufacturer.

  • Lifespan: Up to 30 years if correct ventilation and roof installation are in place.

Luxury Asphalt Shingles

Roofing materials resembling slate and cedar shake are available in various styles and colors. Despite their higher cost, Luxury Asphalt shingles have a three-dimensional appearance and are incredibly long-lasting.

Aside from the fact that they are designed to look like slates, Luxury or Premium shingles are also larger than other Asphalt shingles.

For period-style residences, this style is an excellent alternative. However, the additional layers and weight they add may not be the best option for your house. But, despite the time and effort required to install them, the result is worth it.

  • Cost: Costs almost twice the price of a Dimensional Asphalt Shingle, making it the most expensive type of asphalt shingle.

  • Warranty: The manufacturer offers a 30-year prorated warranty right out of the box. The 50-year non-prorated enhanced warranty is available, much as dimensional shingles.

  • Lifespan: Up to 50 years might be expected with a suitable attic and roof installation ventilation.

As you may have seen, shingles don’t have an actual price listed. This is because the cost of roofing materials changes frequently.

Invest in a High-Quality Asphalt Roof Instead of a Cheap One

The cost of installing an asphalt shingle roof is not cheap. That’s why a new asphalt roof is referred to as a financial investment.

To get the most out of an asphalt shingle roof, you need to invest in quality rather than focusing on the lowest price. The cheapest supplies and the cheapest labor are guaranteed if you go cheap.

In the long run, you’ll spend more money on repairs and a complete asphalt roof replacement if you pay for this low-quality labor and materials. In addition, even if you purchase dimensional or luxury shingles, you will not be eligible for the extended warranty.
